Michael was born on November 23, 1940 in Port Huron, Michigan and lived in Chicago, Queens and Glen Cove, Long Island during his youth.
At the age of sixteen his father sent him to New York Military Academy for fear his son was becoming a juvenile delinquent.
After graduation in 1958, he attended Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida for two years before returning to New York.
In 1966 he joined the Ginger Men as drummer and played with them for two years until a fire in a nightclub sealed their fate. Remnants of the Ginger Men surfaced on a 1968 album by Playback called The Appletree Theater. Michael appears on two tracks.
By then he had been scooped up by Cat Mother and the All Night Newsboys who started rehearsing in his loft at Bleecker and Bowery.
